Indian medal prospect Vinesh Phogat was left writhing and crying in pain after suffering a twisted knee in the Women's 48kg freestyle second round contest against China’s Yunan Sun here today.
Vinesh had scored an easy 11-0 win over her Romanian rival Emilia Alina in the first round. The Indian was technically far superior and was expected to get past her Chinese opponent.
The 21-year-old Indian was leading Sun 1-0 and looking really good when that tragic accident happened. She fell down in excruciating pain, shouting for help. She was taken away on a stretcher from the court and the Chinese got the win.
Vinesh was given first aid and rushed in an ambulance to the hospital inside the Games Village for an MRI and X-ray.
“Her right knee is badly injured. It looks like the tear of lateral-collateral ligament. It could also be a meniscal tear. I am just leaving with her for the village. We will wait for MRI and X-ray reports and hope for the best,” Pawandeep Singh Kohli, the chief medical officer of the Indian contingent  said.
“It is a horrible injury. She was in extreme pain and crying bitterly, not only due to her injury, but also because she had lost the chance to win a medal. She is a very brave girl,” said the doctor.
"Vinesh had really worked hard for the competition" said the doctor. "She told me this morning that God willing I will get the medal by this evening, but luck played a cruel role."
The other Indian girl in the fray, Sakshi Mallik in the 58kg category, fought back from 0-4 down to post an impressive 5-4 win over her Swedish opponent Johanna Mattsson to enter the pre-quarter-finals.
She lost her next round to Russian Koblova Zholobova 3-4 but as the Russian made it to the final the Indian has got another chance to have a go at the bronze medal.
