Mumbai-based Yogesh Desai was ranked as World No. 7 in the Men's 65+ category by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in its December 2019 World Veterans Ranking.
The rankingis the highest achieved by an Indian veteran player so far. It is based on Desai's performance at the Doha WVT where he won the silver and the gold in doubles. He was previously ranked 37.
Subsequently after another WVT ranking tournament at Cardiff in December 2019, Desai's ranking has changed to 8 in January 2020 as he had missed that event.
Desai, 68, has been playing competitive table tennis for the last 54 years without a break, a rare feat.
He represented Gujarat in the junior and men's events at the Nationals for seven years and also used to play for the M S University of Baroda.
He moved to Mumbai in 1985 and continued playing in the men's events till the age of 48 and then started playing in the veteran's category, which he continues to do.
He is a four-time National Veterans Champion in 50, 60 and 65 categories so far.
He has participated in seven World Veterans Table Tennis Championships so far and is planning to play the eighth at Bordeaux in France in June this year.
He was a bronze medalist in the Pattaya Asian Veterans' Championship in 50+ and won the silver medal in team championship. In 2018 World Veterans' Championship at Las Vegas, he reached the quarter-finals in the men's doubles 65+ category.
Currently, he is also involved in the promotion of the table tennis and the welfare of table tennis players in various roles as an administrator, promoter and so on.
