Afghanistan down West Indies by six run for first win in Group stage
Nagpur, March 27, 2016
Najibullah Zadran slammed an unbeaten 48 to help Afghanistan down the West Indies by six runs in a Group 1 Super 10 match in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here this evening.
Put in to bat first, Afghanistan made 123 for seven from their 20 overs, helped by Zadran's knock and useful contributions by opener Mohammad Shahzad (24) and skipper Asghar Stanikzai (16).
Zadran's 48 not out was compiled off 40 balls and included five fours and a six.
In response, the West Indies, who are leading the group and have already qualified for the semi-finals, were restricted to 117 for eight wickets in their 20 overs.
Dwayne Bravo topscored for the West Indies with 28 runs and opener Johnson Charles made 20.
This was the first ever win in the Group stage of the tournament for Afghanistan, who had qualified for the Super 10 this year for the first time in three attempts. They, however, finished at the bottom of the group with one win and three losses in their four outings.
Asked to make first use of the pitch by West Indies skipper Darren Sammy, Afghanistan got into trouble soon as spinner Samuel Badree managed to get a perfect googly through Usman Ghani's bat and pad to dismiss him for 4 in a total of 8 in the second over.
Shahzad and Stanikzai took the score to 33 before the former was caught by Sulieman Benn to give Badree his second wicket off the last ball of the power play. Shahzad's 24 came off 22 balls and included two shots to the ropes and a massive 92-metre six. Benn took the catch running forward from mid-on.
Stanikzai was Badree’s third wicket in his four-over spell, He departed in the 10th over, powering the ball but not far enough as it fell into the safe hands of Bravo at long-on. Samiullah Shenwari (1) did not last very long and fell in the next over, caught by Bravo off Benn to make it 52 for four.
Zardan came in at that stage and promptly took control of the innings and made some headway by striking four boundaries, including a reverse sweep, and a six.
He did not find much support at the other end as Gulbadin Naib (8), Mohammad Nabi (9) and Shafiqullah (4) departed without getting into double figures. Rashid Khan remained not out with 6.
Chasing 124 for a win, the West Indies lost south-paw Evin Lewis (0) early when he sent a ball from spinner Ameer Hamza straight to Rashid Khan.
Charles was back in the pavilion in the last over of the power play, bowled by Hamid Hassan. Andre Fletcher retired hurt at 11 at the end of the sixth over and Marlon Samuels (5) was bowled by Rashid Khan to make it 38 for three in 6.2 overs.
Bravo and Denesh Ramdin added 41 runs for the fourth wicket to take the West Indies to 79 for four. Bravo appeared set as he smashed a huge into the stands near mid-wicket but Nabi trapped him leg before wicket in the 14th over.
Ramdin (18) made his exit ten runs later, stumped by Shahzad off Khan. leaving Andre Russell (7) and Sammy (6) with the task of taking the side past the target.
Russell left in the 18th over, leaving the skipper with Carlos Brathwaite (13) at the crease with 26 runs required off the last 15 balls.
Sammy was caught by Shenwari off Naib in the 19th over, and the side needed 10 from the last over.
Brathwaite scooped a ful toss from Nabi straight into the hands of
hands of N Zardan at mid-wicket. His 13 included two sixes, one of them going to 100 metres. Ultimately, the West Indies fell six runs short.
