Philip Barton, Director General, Consular and Security in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), has been appointed as the new British High Commissioner to India.
He will take up his appointment during Spring 2020 in succession to Dominic Asquith, a press release from the FCO said here on Thursday.
Barton, who was the British High Commissioner in Islamabad from 2014-16, had served as Director-General of Prime Minister's Anti-Corruption Summit in the Cabinet Office in 2016 and as Acting Chair, Joint Intelligence Committee in the Cabinet Office in 2016-17. He was also Consulting Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Among other assignments, he was Deputy Head of Mission in Washington from 2011-13, Director, Foreign Policy and Afghanistan/Pakistan Coordinator in the Cabinet Office from 2009-11 and Additional Director, South Asia in the FCO in 2008-09.
Barton had been posted as First Secretary -- External in the British High Commission in New Delhi from 1994-96.
