Former IAS officer Sunil Arora appointed as Election Commissioner

New Delhi, August 31, 2017

The President has appointed Mr. Sunil Arora, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1980 batch (Rajasthan cadre), has been appointed as an Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India.
The appointment will be with effect from the date he assumes office, an official press release said.
Mr. Arora had served as Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting before superannuating on 30.04.2016.
Later, he was appointed as the Director General and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), a think tank under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Among other assignments, Mr. Arora has served as Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship; Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles; and as Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines before it was merged with Air India.
In Rajasthan, he has held various  positions, including as Secretary to the Chief Minister.
One post of Election Commissioner had fallen vacant following the retirement of Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi. He was succeeded by Mr. Achal Kumar Joti, while Mr. Om Prakash Rawat is the other Election Commissioner.
