Two kids among nine killed in truck-car collision in Gujarat

In a tragic accident in Gujarat's Anand district, a car collided head-on with a truck on Wednesday morning, killing nine members of a family, including two children.
"The accident occurred on the state highway connecting Tarapur in Anand district to Vataman in Ahmedabad district at around 5 a.m. in the morning. Nine persons including five men, two women and two children around 4-5 years of age were killed. All the deceased were taken to the Tarapur Referral hospital and the police is carrying out the identification process," said an official of the Tarapur police station.
The Eeco vehicle was on its way from Surat to Bhavnagar when an oncoming speeding truck, driving on the wrong side, smashed it near Duravat factory, Indranaj village in Anand district on Wednesday morning, the police said.
"The entire Ajmeri family is from Bhavnagar and were returning from Surat," said one of the relatives of the family who rushed to the spot.
As soon as the accident happened, the local police and the 108 emergency services ambulance reached the spot.
The official said that both the driver and the cleaner of the truck fled from the spot after the accident. The police has registered a case and is investigating the matter.
According to the police, the truck was registered in the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh.
President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his grief over the accident. "I am deeply pained by the news of deaths of many from a single family, including women and children in a road accident in Anand. My deep feelings for the grieving family."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the next-of-kin of the victims.
"Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Anand district in Gujarat. Condolences to those who lost their near and dear ones. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be provided to the next of kin of those deceased: PM @narendramodi", the Prime Minister's Office said on Twitter.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also condoled the loss of lives in the accident.
