Somali pirates have hijacked a cargo vessel of Italy, with 18 crew, including seven Indians, on board on December 27.
The Turkey-bound vessel - MT Enrico Ievoli - containing a cargo of about 15,000 metric tonnes of caustic soda, was on a voyage from the port of Bandar Imam Khomeini (BIK) in Iran to Yumuatalik in Turkey.
At the time of hijacking, the position of the vessel was 18°18' North and 59°36' East, the sources in Directorate General of Shipping said here today.
Among the crew on board are 7 Indians, 6 Italians and 5 Ukrainians.
"We received the information that the master of the vessel had reportedly informed the owners that the ship is now bound to Somali coast. So far, there are no reports of any injuries to the crew," the sources said.
With the latest hijacking, the total number of Indian seafarers on merchant vessels captured by Somali pirates has gone up to 43.
