Ghaziabad Police launch search operation for 'abducted' woman
A 23-year-old woman, who is working as an executive in the legal department of e-commerce major Snapdeal, was allegedly abducted in an autorickshaw while on her way home in Ghaziabad last night, police said.
Police sources said the woman, Dipti Sarna, took a Metro train every day to travel from Gurgaon, where her office is located, to Vaishali in Ghaziabad. From there, she normally travelled in an autorickshaw to a point from where her father picked her up every evening, they said.
According to the police, Dipti informed her father yesterday that he had crossed the point near the Hindon bridge and that she would shortly be reaching the place from where she had to be picked up.
Later, she rang up a friend in Hyderabad, who heard her shouting at the autorickshaw driver for taking a wrong turn. After that, she could not be contacted on her mobile phone. The friend promptly informed her family that Dipti appeared to be in some sort of trouble. The family, in turn, immediately informed the police. They also kept trying her mobile phone but could not establish contact with her.
Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Salmantaj Patil told journalists that the police had immediately launched a massive search operation in the area from where Dipti had made the last phone call. A first information report (FIR) about the alleged abduction has been registered at the Sihani Gate Police Station.
He said the victim's last known location was found to be near Morti village near Raj Nagar Extension, on the basis of electronic surveillance.
"We have found some people who saw the autorickshaw. We are investigating further with the help of several teams. It appears to be a case of abduction," he said.
He also said that several autorickshaw drivers and owners living in the area were being questioned in this regard.
"Our friend Dipti Sarna is missing since yesterday. Please DM any info you might have & #HelpFindDipti," Snapdeal said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Delhi Police said they had alerted all police patrol vehicles in the national capital, too.
In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police of Ghaziabad to personall y head the search operation. He told the officer to form special teams for the search efforts.
"Deeply disturbed by news of our @Snapdeal team member getting abducted yest. We are working closely w/ authorities to secure her safety," Snapdeal co-founder Kunal Bahl said on Twitter.
