Shopkeepers protest erection of VCK banners in Tiruchendur
Tiruchendur, January 29, 2011
A majority of shopkeepers and commercial establishments in the temple town of Tiruchendur and its surrounding areas downed shutters in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu today.
The traders were protesting against the erection of huge banners and flex boards by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) to welcome their leader Thol Thirumavalavan in and around Tiruchendur bus stand, which they alleged was disturbing their business activities.
The traders were also demanding action against policemen who used force to disperse the traders when they were observing a "road roko" agitation last evening, demanding removal of the banners.
A majority of shopkeepers in Tiruchendur, Arumuganeri, Udangudi, Kurumbur and Athur downed their shutters this morning. A large number of policemen were deployed in the sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
Tirumavalavan is scheduled to address a public meeting at Tiruchendur today to mark the second anniversary of the self-immolation of K Muthukumar (26), a journalist, who immolated himself for the Sri Lankan Tamil issue on January 29, 2009, in Chennai.
