Sheila Dikshit sworn in as Kerala Governor
Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was sworn in as the 22nd Governor of Kerala here today.
Ms Dikshit was administered the oath of office by Kerala High Court Chief Justice Manjula Chellur at a ceremony in Raj Bhavan. .
Ms Dikshit has succeeded Mr Nikhil Kumar, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who served as Governor of the state for about a year until March 4 this year, when he resigned to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections from Aurangabad in Bihar.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, his cabinet colleagues, Ms Dikshit's family and some of her supporters from Delhi were present on the occasion.
Ms Dikshit, who will turn 76 on March 31, served a record three consecutive five-year terms as Chief Minister of Delhi from 1998 to 2013. She was defeated in the Gole Market constituency of the capital in the December 4, 2013 elections to the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
She lost by a huge margin to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, who went on to serve as Chief Minister of Delhi for 49 days before he resigned. The Congress managed to win only eight seats in the 70-member house.
Born on March 31, 1938, Ms Dikshit has an M.A. in history from Miranda House, University of Delhi. She was married to the late Vinod Dikshit, who was an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. Her son Sandeep Dikshit is a Congress member of the Lok Sabha, representing the East Delhi constituency. She also has a daughter, Latika Dikshit Syed.
Ms Dikshit represented the Kannauj constituency in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha from 1984-89. During this period, she served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and later as a Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office.
