President Ram Nath Kovind today awarded the Bharat Ratna -- the nation's highest civilian honour -- to his predecessor Pranab Mukherjee, the late social activisit Nanaji Deshmukh and late Assamese music composer and singer Bhupen Hazarika.
The awards were announced this evening on the eve of Republic Day 2019.
Mr. Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from July 25, 2012 to July 25, 2017, capping a long political career spread over five decades. He was elected to the top post as the candidate of the then ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
