Sunil Kumar Verma, one of the accused in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his licensed revolver at his Vikas Nagar residence in Lucknow today.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said here that Verma, the then Resident Engineer (Technical), Construction & Designs (C&DS), a unit of UP Jal Nigam, was one of the accused in a NRHM related case registered by it.
It said the case related to alleged irregularities in upgradation of 134 district hospitals by C&DS (UP Jal Nigam).
The agency said its officers had searched the premises of Verma on January 4 this year, along with the premises of other accused and suspects in the case.
The CBI, however, made it clear that Verma had not been examined and nor had he been called or summoned for questioning.
The incident occurred around 8.30 am. The engineer was immediately rushed to hospital where he died.
This is the fourth mysterious death related to the alleged scam. Two chief medical officers (CMOs) were killed and a deputy CMO arrested in connection with the case was founded dead in jail.
The Allahabad High Court entrusted the CBI with the task of probing the alleged misappropriation of NRHM funds after these deaths.
