President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted Malayalees in India and abroad on the occasion of Onam.
“On the joyous occasion of Onam, I convey my heartfelt greetings to all my sisters and brothers in Kerala and abroad," Mr Mukherjee said.
He noted that Onam is a unique secular festival celebrated by the people of Kerala belonging to all communities, irrespective of caste, creed and economic standing.
"It represents the spontaneous celebrations of the common people as they welcome their legendary King Mahabali, who was loved by all for his just and benevolent rule. Coinciding with the harvest season, Onam brings with it optimism for the future and gratitude for nature’s bounty.
"May this year’s Onam usher in a new era of happiness and prosperity across our country," he added.
Mr Ansari said Onam marked the beginning of the harvest season in various parts of the country.
"Celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm, this festival reflects the central role of agriculture in Indian society. May the festival usher in peace, prosperity and happiness in our country," he said.
"On the special occasion of Onam, I extend my greetings to the Malayalee community across the world. The spirit of togetherness with which Onam is celebrated is truly gladdening. May Onam further the spirit of joy and prosperity in society," Mr Modi said.
