Modi's Twitter account compromised briefly, now restored
New Delhi, December 12, 2021
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal Twitter account was compromised briefly in the early hours of Sunday, after which it has been restored and some malicious tweets deleted.
"The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said on the micro-blogging site.
"In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored," the PMO added.
Several Twitter users shared screenshots of two tweets put out from Modi's account during the period when it was compromised.
"India has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and distributing them to all residents of the country," the tweets said, with a link to a possible scam.
The tweets were deleted soon but not before several Twitter users noticed them, shared screenshots and alerted the authorities concerned.
