Magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolts Saurashtra, Kutch regions of Gujarat

An earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, jolted the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat this evening, the National Centre of Seismology (NCS) said.
The quake, which had its epicentre at latitude 23.3N and longitude 70.4E, 118 km north-northwest of Rajkot, occurred at 2014 hours at a focal depth of 10 km, a bulletin from NCS said.
Tremors were felt in different parts of Saurashtra and Kutch as well as Ahmedabad in Central Gujarat, reports reaching here said.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered the district colelctors of Kutch, Rajkot and Patan to take stock of the situation after the tremors were felt across the state. He told them to assess the damages, if any.
The short-span tremor triggered panic and people came out on to the streets for safety.
So far no loss of life or damage to property has been reported from any part of the state.
Rupani also instructed the Disaster Management Cell's control room to be operational and be on standby.
