Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row on February 16 after leading his party to a spectacular win in the elections to the Delhi Legislative Assembly held on February 8.
In the counting of votes held yesterday, AAP bagged as many as 62 of the 70 seats in the Assembly, leaving just eight for the BJP, which is in office at the Centre but has remained out of power in the National Capital Territory of Delhi for more than two decades.
At a meeting of all the 62 newly-elected MLAs at his residence here this morning, Kejriwal, the Chief Minister in the outgoing government, was elected unopposed as the leader of the AAP Legislature Party once again. His name was proposed by Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister, and supported by other leaders.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10 am on Sunday at the historical Ramlila Maidan -- where Kejriwal had taken oaths of office and secrecy on the previous two occasions, too. AAP has invited all residents of Delhi for the ceremony.
Speaking to the media, Sisodia said the newly-elected legislators had unanimously elected Kejriwal as leader of the legislature party.
"Everyone in Delhi is invited to come and bless Kejriwal their son, their brother," he said.
Sisodia said that Kejriwal will take oath as the Chief Minister for the third consecutive term on February 16.
"The oath-taking ceremony will take place at Ramlila Maidan. Kejriwal will be sworn in along with his team of ministers. Kejriwal also met the party MLAs today. The legislators then elected him as the leader of the legislature party. After this, he will stake claim to form the government," Sisodia said.
He said the oath taking ceremony will start at 10 a.m. and everyone in Delhi is invited to come. Sisodia also expressed his gratitude to the people of Delhi for keeping their faith in AAP.
"This is a historic mandate for the AAP and for the first time in India people voted for the work. People have rejected the politics of hatred. People have shown that the citizens of Delhi are pro-development and pro-work. The people of Delhi believe that the work of the government is to make Delhi a better place. Today, the people of Delhi have proved that the development model of Kejriwal is something which will allow the country and the economy to progress."
He went on to say that the meaning of the "Deshbhakti" or patriotism is now "giving good education, health infrastructure, making a better city and ensuring the safety of women. Lastly, in this election, the people of Delhi have said that Kejriwal is their son and brother and they want him as the Chief Minister," added Sisodia.
Kejriwal's first term lasted for just two months from December 28, 2013 to February 14, 2014, after which Delhi came under President's Rule for about a year.
In February 2015, he led the AAP to a comprehensive win, bagging 67 of the 70 seats, leaving the BJP with just three.
