India's daily COVID-19 cases dip to 167,059, deaths rise to 1,192 in last 24 hours

India's daily COVID-19 cases dipped sharply to 167,059 in the last 24 hours but the number of deaths registered in this period rose to 1,192.

However, the number of 1,192 deaths posted in the last 24 hours included as many as 638 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Yesterday, the country had reported 209,918 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 959 deaths, including 374 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala.

If the 638 previously unreported deaths in Kerala are not counted, the number of people who died of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours in India was 554, slightly lower than the 585 recorded yesterday.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 496,242 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 41,469,499 today.

Not counting the 638 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 554 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 91 deaths in Kerala, 56 in Karnataka, 36 in West Bengal, 39 each in Maharashtra and Punjab, 38 in Delhi, 35 in Gujarat, 23 in Rajasthan, 20 in Tamil Nadu, 19 each in Assam, Chhattisgarh and Haryana, 18 each in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, 15 in Jammu & Kashmir, and 10 in Uttarakhand.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with five States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country crossed the 39-milllion mark to 39,230,198 today, up 254,076 from yesterday. The recovery rate improved to 94.60% from 94.37% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country fell for the seventh consecutive day today, going down by 88,209 to 1,743,059 today.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 166.68 crore today, including 61.45 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate fell to 11.69% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 15.25%.

A total of 73.06 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 14.28 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
