India's daily COVID-19 cases cross 200,000 to touch 247,417 in last 24 hours

Number of active cases of COVID-19 crosses 1-million mark at 1,117,531

India today saw another steep climb in the number of daily COVID-19 cases as it crossed the 200,000-mark to touch 247,417 in the last 24 hours, the highest since May 22, 2021 when 257,299 cases had been registered in the country.

There were 380 deaths in the last 24 hours, including 176 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Yesterday, the country had recorded 194,720 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 442 deaths, including 277 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

If the 176 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala are not taken into account, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 204, as compared to 165 yesterday.

The continuing surge in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, including night curfews, closure of schools and colleges and limits on the numbers at social and religious gatherings.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 5,488 case of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of COVID-19, had been confirmed in India so far (Up from 4,868 yesterday), of whom 2,162 had recovered.

Of the 5,488 Omicron cases, Maharashtra accounted for the most at 1,367, followed by Rajasthan 792, Delhi 549, Kerala 486, Karnataka 479, West Bengal 294, Uttar Pradesh 275, Telangana 260, Gujarat 236, Tamil Nadu 185, Odisha 169 and Haryana 162.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 485,035 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, went up to 36,317,927.

Not counting the 176 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 204 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 40 deaths in Delhi, 32 in Maharashtra, 23 each in Kerala and West Bengal, 19 in Tamil Nadu and 10 each in Karnataka and Punjab.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with 12 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,715,361 today, up 84,825 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 95.59% from 96.01% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 15th day today, going up by 162,212 to past the million-mark at 1,117,531.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 154.61 crore today, including 76.32 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 13.11% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 10.80%.
