New Delhi, January 6, 2022

India today reported 90,928 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 325 more deaths in the last 24 hours as most parts of the country continued to grapple with a huge surge in the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 325 deaths added to the tally today included 229 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 58,097 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 534 deaths, including 423 previously unreported deaths in Kerala.

Not counting the 229 previously undeclared deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stood at 96.

The continuing spike in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, especially of the new and more transmissible Omicron variant.

Of the 96 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 29 and West Bengal 17.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 16 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

National capital Delhi registered eight COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,341,009 today, up 19,206 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped to 97.81% from 98.01% yesterday.
