India reports 6,563 new cases of COVID-19 infection, number of deaths dips to 132 in last 24 hours

New Delhi, December 20, 2021

India today reported 6,563 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 132 deaths in the last 24 hours, lower than yesterday's numbers.

The 132 deaths posted in the last 24 hours included 85 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 7,081 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 264 deaths, including 175 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the 85 previously unreported deaths in Kerala, India today posted 47 deaths due to the pandemic in the last 24 hours.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health of Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country so far has climbed to 477,554 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 34,746,838 today.

Of the 47 COVID-19 deaths registered in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 11.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 21 States and Union Territories, including national capital Delhi, posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,187,017 today, up 8,077 from yesterday. The recovery rate stood at 98.39%, the highest since March 2020.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country went down by 1,646 to 82,267, the lowest in 572 days.

The Ministry said that the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 137.67 crore, including 15.82 lakh doses administered during the last 24 hours.

The Weekly Positivity Rate stood at 0.60% today, below 2% for the 87th day and below 1% for the 35th consecutive day, while the Daily Positivity Rate was 0.75% today, below 2% for 77 consecutive days and below 1% for the 21st consecutive day.
