India reports 37,379 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 124 deaths in last 24 hours

India reports 37,379 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 124 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 4, 2022

India today reported 37,379 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 124 deaths in the last 24 hours as most parts of the country saw a spike in the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 124 deaths added today included 41 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 33,750 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 123 deaths, including 66 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the 41 previously undeclared deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stood at 83.

The continuing spike in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, especially of the new and more transmissible Omicron variant.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 1,892 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of COVID-19, had been reported in India so far (up from 1,700 yesterday), of whom 766 have recovered.

Of the 1,892, Maharashtra accounted for the most at 568, followed by Delhi 382, Kerala 185, Rajasthan 174, Gujarat 152, Tamil Nadu 121, Telangana 67, Karnataka 64 and Haryana 63.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 482,017 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 34,960,261 today.

Of the 83 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 30, West Bengal 13 and Maharashtra 11.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 21 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period. National capital Delhi registered one COVID-19 death in the last 24 hours.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,306,414 today, up 11,007 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped to 98.13% from 98.20% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the seventh day today, going up by 26,248 to 171,830 today.

The Ministry said that the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 146.70 crore, including 99.27 lakh doses administered during the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate stood at 3.24% today, while the Weekly Positivity Rate rose to 2.05%.
