India reports 234,281 new cases of COVID-19, 893 deaths in last 24 hours

India today reported 234,281 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 893 deaths during the last 24 hours, close to the numbers posted yesterday.

The 893 deaths registered in the last 24 hours included 311 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 235,532 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 871 deaths, including 258 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the previously unreported 311 deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in India in the last 24 hours stood at 582 today, lower than the 613 posted yesterday.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 494,091 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, crossed the 41-million mark to each 41,092,522 today.

Not counting the 311 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 582 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 94 deaths in Kerala, 70 in Karnataka, 61 in Maharashtra, 46 in Tamil Nadu, 35 in West Bengal, 33 in Gujarat, 31 in Punjab, 28 in Delhi, 25 in Uttar Pradesh, 22 each in Assam and Rajasthan, 15 each in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, 13 in Haryana, and 10 each in Goa and Uttarakhand.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with four States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 38,713,494 today, up 352,784 from yesterday. The recovery rate increased to 94.21% from 93.89% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country fell for the sixth consecutive day today, going down by 119,396 to below the two-million mark at 1,884,937.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 165.70crore today, including 62.22 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 14.50% while the Weekly Positivity Rate fell to 16.40%.

A total of 72.73 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 16.15 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
