India reports 179,723 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 146 deaths in last 24 hours

India reports 179,723 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 146 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 10, 2022

India today reported 179,723 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 146 deaths in the last 24 hours as the governments at the Centre and in the States geared up to battle a fresh wave of the coronavirus pandemic, fuelled mainly by the new and more transmissible Omicron variant of the virus.

The country had yesterday logged 159,632 cases of COVID-19 infection and 327 deaths, including 209 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The 146 deaths recorded today included 14 previously undeclared deaths in Kerala.

The continuing surge in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, including night curfews, closure of schools and colleges and limits on the numbers at social and religious gatherings.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 4,033 cases of Omicron had been reported in India so far (up from 3,623 yesterday), of whom 1,552 had recovered.

Of the 4,033, Maharashtra accounted for the most at 1,216, followed by Rajasthan 529, Delhi 513, Karnataka 441, Kerala 333, Gujarat 236, Tamil Nadu 185, Haryana 123, Telangana 123, and Uttar Pradesh 113.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 483,936 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 35,707,727 today.

Maharashtra accounted for the most number of new cases in the last 24 hours at 44,388, followed by 24,287 in West Bengal, 22,751 in Delhi, 12,895 in Tamil Nadu, 12,000 in Karnataka, 7,680 in Uttar Pradesh, 6,275 in Gujarat, 6,238 in Kerala, 5,660 in Rajasthan, 5,166 in Haryana and 5,022 in Bihar.

Of the 146 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 44, West Bengal 18, Delhi 17, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu 12 each and Punjab 10.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 14 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,500,172 today, up 46,569 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 96.62% from 96.98% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 13th day today, going up by 133,008 to reach 723,619 today.

Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in the country at 205,973, followed by 78,111 in West Bengal, 60,733 in Delhi, 51,335 in Tamil Nadu, 49,631 in Karnataka, 35,601 in Kerala, 27,913 in Gujarat, 25,974 in Uttar Pradesh 23,328 in Haryana and 19,467 in Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 151.84 crore today, including 29.60 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 13.29% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 7.92%.
