India reports 1,005 deaths, 48,786 new cases of infection in last 24 hours

India today reported 1,005 deaths due to COVID-19 and 48,786 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours as the spread of the coronavirus pandemic continued to slow down in most parts of the country.
The number of deaths has bounced back to above 1,000 today after staying below that level for three days. The number of new cases has stayed below the 50,000-mark for four days now.
The country had reported 817 deaths and 45,951 fresh cases of infection yesterday.
After the brutal second wave of the pandemic in April-May, the number of deaths in a single day has remained below 3,000 for the 17th consecutive day today after staying above that level for the previous five days. The number had fallen below 3,000 on June 1 for the first time after April 28. It has remained below 2,000 for 14 days now.
The country had registered more than 4,000 deaths in a single day on 13 days in May.
The number of new cases of infection in the country in a 24-hour period has remained below 100,000 for the 24th consecutive day today.
The highest number of new cases in a 24-hour period -- 414,188 -- was reported on May 7.
With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health of Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll so far has climbed to 399,459 today.
The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 30,411,634 today.
Of the 1,005 deaths reported in the last 24 hours in India, Uttarakhand accounted for 221, a number which included 218 previously unreported deaths which have now been added to the tally.
This was followed by 142 deaths in Kerala, 141 in Maharashtra, by far the worst-affected state, 113 in Tamil Nadu, 111 in Karnataka, 48 in Odisha, 35 in Andhra Pradesh, 30 in Assam, 29 in West Bengal, 19 in Punjab, 15 in Madhya Pradesh, 14 each in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, and ten in Telangana.
The other states reported less than 10 deaths each in the last 24 hours. There were six COVID-19 deaths in national capital Delhi during this period.
The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 29,488,918 today, up 61,588 from yesterday. The recovery rate has improved to 96.96% from 96.91% yesterday.
This is the 49th consecutive day that the number of recoveries has exceeded the number of new cases.
The number of active cases dipped by 13,807 to 523,257, the lowest since March 29, when the number was 521,808.
The number of active cases had touched 3,745,237 on May 10, the highest since the pandemic began in India. The active caseload had been continuously rising after February 12 this year, when it had touched its lowest mark of 135,926 in recent months. However, since May 11, there has been a steady downtrend.
The Health Ministry said a total 33.57 doses of vaccination had been administered so far in the country. A total of 27.60 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours.
The Weekly Positivity Rate is currently at 2.64% while the Daily Positivity rate stood at 2.54% today. It has remained less than 5% for 24 consecutive days now.
