India registers 337,704 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 488 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 22, 2022

India today registered 337,704 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 488 deaths in the last 24 hours as the spread of the pandemic in many states remained a cause of concern for the authorities.

The country had yesterday recorded 347,254 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 703 deaths, including 309 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Today's number of 488 deaths includes 73 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala. If these 73 are not counted, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 415 today, as compared to 394 yesterday.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 10,050 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of the virus, had been detected in India so far, up from 9,692 yesterday.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 488,884 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 38,903,731 today.

Not counting the 73 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 415 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 52 in Maharashtra, 38 in Delhi, 35 in West Bengal, 33 each in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, 31 in Punjab, 22 each in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, 16 in Gujarat, 15 each in Assam and Rajasthan, 12 in Haryana and 11 in Bihar.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with five States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country increased to 36,301,482 today, up 242,676 from yesterday. The recovery rate fell further to 93.31% today from 93.50% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 24th day today, going up by 94,540 to 2,113,365.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 161.16 crore today, including 67.49 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate stood at 17.22% and the Weekly Positivity Rate at 16.65%.

A total of 71.34 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 19.60 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
