India records 347, 254 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 703 deaths in last 24 hours

India records 347, 254 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 703 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 21, 2022

India today recorded 347,254 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 703 deaths in the last 24 hours as the spread of the pandemic in many states continued to cause concern.

The country had yesterday logged 317,532 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 491 deaths, including 85 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Today's number of 703 deaths includes as many as 309 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala. If these 309 are not taken into account, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 394 today, as compared to 406 yesterday.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 9,692 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of the virus, had been detected in India so far, up from 9,287 yesterday.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 488,396 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 38,566,027 today.

Not counting the 309 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 394 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 43 deaths in Delhi, 39 in Tamil Nadu, 37 each in Maharashtra and West Bengal, 36 in Punjab, 32 in Kerala, 15 in Chhattisgarh, 13 each in Gujarat and Rajasthan, 12 in Assam, and 10 each in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with seven States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country has risen past 36 million and stood at 36,058,806 today, up 251,777 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 93.50% from 93.69% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 23rd day today, crossing the two-million mark at 2,018,825, up 94,774 from yesterday.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 160.43 crore today, including 70.49 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 17.94% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 16.56% today.

A total of 71.15 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 19.35 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
