India logs 31,443 new COVID-19 cases, lowest in 118 days, adds 2,020 deaths

New Delhi, July 13, 2021

India today logged 31,443 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the lowest in 118 days, as the spread of the coronavirus pandemic continued to decelerate across most parts of the country.

However, the country reported 2,020 more deaths in this period, a steep increase from the numbers of the last few days, due mainly to the fact that Madhya Pradesh has added 1,481 deaths to its tally after reconciling the numbers of the past many days.

The country had recorded 724 deaths and 37,154 fresh cases of infection yesterday.

The country had reported more than 4,000 deaths a day on 13 days in May at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic.

The number of new cases has stayed below the 50,000-mark for 16 days now and below 100,000 for the 36th consecutive day today.

The highest number of new cases in a 24-hour period -- 414,188 -- was reported on May 7.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health of Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll so far has climbed to 410,784.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 30,907,282. today.

Of the 2,020 deaths added to the tally in India in the last 24 hours, apart from the 1,481 deaths in Madhya Pradesh, there were 146 deaths in Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, 100 in Kerala, 63 in Odisha, 61 in Karnataka, 37 in Assam, 36 in Tamil Nadu, 22 in Andhra Pradesh, 15 in Manipur and 11 in West Bengal.

The other states reported less than 10 deaths each in the last 24 hours. There were three COVID-19 death in national capital Delhi during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose past the 30-million mark today at 30,063,720, up 49,007 from yesterday. The recovery rate improved to 97.27% from 97.21% yesterday.

This is the 61st consecutive day that the number of recoveries has exceeded the number of new cases.

The number of active cases fell by 18,121 to 432,778 today, the lowest since March 26, when the number was 421,066.

The number of active cases had touched 3,745,237 on May 10, the highest since the pandemic began in India. The active caseload had been continuously rising after February 12 this year, when it had touched its lowest mark of 135,926 in recent months. However, since May 11, there has been a steady downtrend.

The Health Ministry said a total of 38.14 crore crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered so far in the country.

The Weekly Positivity Rate is currently at 2.28% while the Daily Positivity rate has dropped to 1.81% today. It has remained less than 3% for 22 consecutive days now.
