India logs 271,202 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 314 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 16, 2022

India today logged 271,202 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 314 more deaths in the last 24 hours as the increasing caseload remained a cause of worry in many parts of the country.

The country had yesterday added 268,833 cases of COVID-19 infection and 402 deaths, including 179 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Today's number of 314 deaths includes 89 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

The number of 268,833 new cases of infection today is the highest since May 20, 2021, when 276,110 cases were reported.

If the 89 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala are not taken into account, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 225, as compared to 223 yesterday.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 7,743 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of the virus, had been confirmed in India so far, up from 6,041 yesterday.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 486,066 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, crossed the 37-million mark today, going up to 37,122,164.

Not counting the 89 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 225 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 39 deaths in West Bengal, 30 in Delhi, 23 each in Maharashtra and Punjab, 17 in Kerala, and 11 in Tamil Nadu.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with ten States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country has crossed the 35-million mark today at 35,085,721, up 138,331 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 94.51% from 94.83% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 18th day today, going up by 132,557 to 1,550,377 today.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 156.76 crore today, including 66.21 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate declined slightly to 16.28% while the Weekly Positivity Rate rose to 13.69%.
