India logs 251,209 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 627 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 28, 2022

India today logged 251,209 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 627 more deaths during the last 24 hours as the overall numbers remained at elevated levels and continued to be a cause of concern for the authorities.

The number of 627 deaths reported today included 57 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 286,384 cases of COVID-19 infection and 573 deaths, including 77 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the previously unreported 57 deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in India in the last 24 hours stood at 570 today, higher than the 496 posted yesterday.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 492,327 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, climbed to 40,622,709 today.

Not counting the 57 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 570 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 96 deaths in Kerala, 53 in Tamil Nadu, 49 in Karnataka, 48 in Punjab, 42 in Maharashtra, 36 in West Bengal, 34 in Delhi, 22 in Gujarat, 20 each in Assam and Rajasthan, 19 each in Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, 18 in Haryana, 15 in Goa, and 13 in Uttarakhand.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with five States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country crossed the 38-million mark and stood at 38,024,771 today, up 347,443 from yesterday. The recovery rate increased to 93.60% from 93.33% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country fell for the fourth consecutive day today, going down by 96,861 to 2,105,611 today.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 164.44 crore today, including 57.35 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate fell to 15.88% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 17.47%.

A total of 72.37 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 15.82 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
