India logs 1,358 COVID-19 deaths, 50,848 new cases in last 24 hours

India today logged 1,358 deaths due to COVID-19 and 50,848 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours as the spread of the coronavirus pandemic continued to maintain a downward trend in the country.
Today's numbers are higher than the 1,167 deaths and 42,640 fresh cases of infection reported yesterday, when the number of new cases in a single day had fallen below 50,000 for the first time in nearly three months. Yesterday's deaths were also the lowest in a 24-hour period since April 15.
After the brutal second wave of the pandemic in April-May, the number of deaths in a single day has remained below 3,000 for the ninth consecutive day today after staying above that level for the previous five days. The number had fallen below 3,000 on June 1 for the first time after April 28. It has remained below 2,000 for five days now.
The country had registered more than 4,000 deaths in a single day on 13 days in May.
The number of new cases of infection in the country in the last 24 hours has remained below 100,000 for the 16th consecutive day today.
The highest number of new cases in a 24-hour period -- 414,188 -- was reported on May 7.
With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health of Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll so far has climbed to 390,660.
The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, crossed 30 million, or 3 crore, today at 30,028,709. The total number of cases had crossed the 20 million, or two crore, mark on May 4, which means that the country has added one more crore cases in the last 50 days.
Only the United States, with 33.564 million cases so far, has reported more cases than India in the world. Brazil stands third with 18.054 million cases. France, Turkey and Russia have recorded more than 5 million cases each so far. The world has reported a total of 179.107 million COVID-19 cases and 3.880 million deaths so far.
Of the 1,358 deaths reported in the last 24 hours in India, Maharashtra, by far the worst-hit state, posted 482, followed by 194 deaths in Tamil Nadu, 141 in Kerala, 139 in Karnataka, 58 in Uttar Pradesh, 53 in Andhra Pradesh, 47 in West Bengal, 38 in Odisha, 37 in Asssam and 34 in Punjab.
The other states reported less than 30 deaths each in the last 24 hours. There were eight COVID-19 deaths in national capital Delhi during this period.
The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 28,994,855 today, up 68,817 from yesterday. The recovery rate has improved to 96.55% from 96.49% yesterday.
This is the 41st consecutive day that the number of recoveries has exceeded the number of new cases.
The number of active cases dipped by 19,327 to 643,194 today, the lowest since April 2, when the number was 614,696.
The number of active cases had touched 3,745,237 on May 10, the highest since the pandemic began in India. The active caseload had been continuously rising after February 12 this year, when it had touched its lowest mark of 135,926 in recent months. However, since May 11, there has been a steady downtrend.
The Health Ministry said that a total of 29,46,39,511 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far in the country, including 54,24,374 doses given in the last 24 hours.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 39,59,73,198 samples have been tested in the country up to June 22 for Covid-19. Of these 19,01,056 samples were tested on Tuesday.
