India COVID-19 numbers rise to 282,970 cases of infection, 441 deaths in last 24 hours

India today logged 282,970 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 441 deaths in the last 24 hours, significantly higher than the numbers posted yesterday.
The country had yesterday reported 238,018 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 310 deaths, including 54 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.
Today's number of 441 deaths includes 83 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala. If these 83 are not taken into account, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 358 today, as compared to 256 yesterday.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 8,961 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of the virus, had been confirmed in India so far, up from 8,891 yesterday.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 487,202 today.
The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, went up to 37,901,241 today.
Of the 282,970 fresh cases of infection reported in India in the last 24 hours, Karnataka accounted for 41,457; Maharashtra 39,207; Kerala 28,481; Tamil Nadu 23,888; Gujarat 17,119; Uttar Pradesh 14,701; Delhi 11,684; Odisha 11,086 and West Bengal 10,430.
Not counting the 83 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 358 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 53 deaths in Maharashtra, 39 in Kerala, 38 in Delhi, 34 in West Bengal, 29 in Tamil Nadu, 27 in Punjab, 20 in Karnataka, 16 in Assam, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, and 10 in Gujarat.
All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with 7 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.
The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country increased to 35,583,039 today, up 188,157 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 93.88% from 94.09% yesterday.
The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 21st day today, going up by 94,372 to 1,831,000 today.
Maharashtra accounted for the highest number of active cases at 271,427, followed by 250,410 in Karnataka, 161,171 in Tamil Nadu, 143,219 in Kerala, 155,711 in West Bengal, 101,114 in Uttar Pradesh, 79,600 in Gujarat and 78,112 in Delhi.
Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 158.88 crore today, including 76.35 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.
The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 15.13% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 15.53% today.
A total of 70.74 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 18.69 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
