India adds 9,195 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 302 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, December 29, 2021

India today saw a significant jump in the number of new cases of COVID-19 infection in the last 24 hours, at 9,195, as against 6,358 yesterday, as more States put in place measures to contain the spread of Omicron, a new variant of the coronavirus.

The country also reported 302 deaths during this period, including 206 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Today's number of deaths is slightly higher than the 293 registered yesterday, including 213 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the 206 previously unreported deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stood at 96.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 781 cases of Omicron had been reported in India so far (up from 653 yesterday), of whom 241 had recovered.

Of the 781, Delhi accounted for 238, followed by 167 in Maharashtra, 73 in Gujarat, 65 in Kerala, 62 in Telangana, 46 in Rajasthan, and 34 each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 480,592 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 34,808,886 today.

Of the 96 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 38 and Maharashtra 22.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 16 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period. National capital Delhi recorded one death in the last 24 hours.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,251,292 today, up 7,347 from yesterday. The recovery rate stood at 98.40%, the highest since March 2020.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose by 1,546 to 77,002 today.

The Ministry said that the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 143.15 crore, including 64.61 lakh doses administered during the last 24 hours.

The Weekly Positivity Rate stood at 0.68% today, below 1% for the last 45 days, while the Daily Positivity Rate was 0.79% today, below 2% for 85 consecutive days and below 1% for the 30th consecutive day.
