India adds 8,503 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 624 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, December 10, 2021

India today reported 8,503 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and added 624 more deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic to its tally in the last 24 hours.

The 624 deaths posted in the last 24 hours include as many as 523 previously undeclared fatalities in Chandigarh, Kerala and Goa where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The updating of the tally is being done after due field investigation and scrutiny of records.

The 523 previously undeclared fatalities include 256 in Chandigarh, 173 in Kerala and 94 in Goa.

The country had recorded 9,419 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 159 deaths yesterday, including 77 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the 523 previously unreported deaths in the three States, India today registered 101 deaths due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health of Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country so far has climbed to 474,735 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 34,674,744 today.

Of the 101 COVID-19 deaths registered in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 52 and Tamil Nadu 15.

All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 20 States and Union Territories, including national capital Delhi, posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,103,066 today, up 7,678 from yesterday. The recovery rate stood at 98.36%, the highest since March 2020.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country went up by 201 to 94,943 today.

The Ministry said that the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 131.18 crore, including 74.57 lakh doses administered during the last 24 hours.

The Weekly Positivity Rate stood at 0.72% today, below 2% for the 77th day and below 1% for the 25th consecutive day, while the Daily Positivity Rate was 0.66% today, below 2% for 67 consecutive days and below 1% for the 11th consecutive day.
