India adds 58,097 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection, 534 deaths in last 24 hours

India today added 58,097 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 534 deaths in the last 24 hours -- significantly higher than yesterday's numbers -- as most parts of the country continued to see a surge in the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the 534 deaths reported today included as many as 423 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.
The country had yesterday recorded 37,379 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 124 deaths, including 41 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.
Not counting the 423 previously undeclared deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stood at 111.
The continuing spike in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, especially of the new and more transmissible Omicron variant.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 2,135 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of COVID-19, had been reported in India so far (up from 1,892 yesterday), of whom 828 had recovered.
Of the 2,135, Maharashtra accounted for the most at 653, followed by Delhi 465, Kerala 185, Rajasthan 174, Gujarat 154, Tamil Nadu 121, Telangana 84, Karnataka 77 and Haryana 71.
With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 482,551 today.
The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, crossed 35 million and stood at 35,018,358 today.
Of the 111 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 30, Maharashtra 20 and West Bengal 16.
All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with as many as 14 States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period. National capital Delhi registered three COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,321,803 today, up 15,389 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped to 98.01% today from 98.13% yesterday.
The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the eighth day today, going up by 42.174 to cross the 200,000-mark at 214,004 today.
The Ministry said that the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 147.72 crore, including 96.43 lakh doses administered during the last 24 hours.
The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 4.18% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 2.05%.
