India adds 333,533 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 525 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 23, 2022

India today added 333,533 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 525 deaths in the last 24 hours as the high numbers of new cases in many states continued to be a cause of concern for the authorities.

The number of 525 deaths registered in the last 24 hours included 62 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

This means that, not counting the 62 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in India in the last 24 hours stood at 463 as compared to 415 yesterday.

The country had yesterday reported 337,704 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 488 deaths, including 73 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

This is the fourth consecutive day that India has posted in excess of 300,000 cases in a 24-hour period.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 489,409 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose past the 39-million mark today to 39,237,264.

Not counting the 62 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 463 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 70 deaths in Kerala, 48 in Maharashtra, 45 in Delhi, 37 in West Bengal, 35 in Punjab, 33 in Tamil Nadu, 26 in Karnataka, 17 in Rajasthan, 16 in Uttar Pradesh, 15 in Gujarat, 13 in Assam, 11 each in Chhattisgarh and Haryana, and 10 in Bihar.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with six States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country increased to 36,560,650 today, up 259,168 from yesterday. The recovery rate fell further to 93.18% from 93.31% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 25th day today, going up by 73,840 to 2,187,205.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 161.92 crore today, including 71.10 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate stood at 17.78% and the Weekly Positivity Rate at 16.87%.

A total of 71.55 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 18.75 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
