India adds 317,532 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 491 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 20, 2022

India today added 317,532 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 491 deaths in the last 24 hours as the spread of the pandemic appeared to gather pace again after a slight decline in the numbers in the last few days.

The country had yesterday logged 282,970 cases of COVID-19 infection and 441 deaths, including 83 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

Today's number of 491 deaths includes 85 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala. If these 83 are not taken into account, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country in the last 24 hours stands at 406 today, as compared to 358 yesterday.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 9,287 cases of Omicron, the new and more transmissible variant of the virus, had been detected in India so far, up from 8,961 yesterday.

With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 487,693 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, crossed the 38-million mark today and stood at 38,218,773.

Not counting the 85 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 406 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 49 deaths each in Kerala and Maharashtra, 38 in West Bengal, 35 each in Delhi and Tamil Nadu, 29 in Punjab, 21 in Karnataka, 15 in Assam, 12 each in Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan, and 11 in Bihar.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with eight States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country increased to 35,807,029 today, up 223,990 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 93.69% from 93.88% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 22nd day today, going up by 93,051 to 1,924,051 today.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 159.67 crore today, including 73.38 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 16.41% and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 16.06% today.

A total of 70.93 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 19.35 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
