India adds 286,384 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 573 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi, January 27, 2022

India today added 286,384 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 573 more deaths during the last 24 hours as the continuing high overall numbers in many states remained a cause of concern for the authorities.

The number of 573 deaths reported today included 77 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.

The country had yesterday recorded 285,914 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 665 deaths, including 84 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala.

Not counting the previously unreported 77 deaths in Kerala, the number of COVID-19 deaths in India in the last 24 hours stood at 496 today, lower than the 581 posted yesterday.

With the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 491,700 today.

The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, climbed to 40,371,500 today.

Not counting the 77 previously unreported fatalities in Kerala, the 496 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours included 79 deaths in Maharashtra, 63 in Kerala, 47 in Tamil Nadu, 39 in Karnataka, 34 in West Bengal, 29 in Delhi, 22 in Punjab, 21 each in Assam, Gujarat and Rajasthan, 18 in Uttar Pradesh, and 10 each in Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Other States reported less than ten deaths each, with six States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.

The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 37,677,328 today, up 306,357 from yesterday. The recovery rate increased to 93.33% from 93.23% yesterday.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country fell for the third consecutive day today, going down by 20,546 to 2,202,472 today.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 163.84 crore today, including 22.35 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The Daily Positivity Rate rose to 19.59% today and the Weekly Positivity Rate to 17.75%.

A total of 72.21 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far in the country, including 14.62 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.
