India adds 168,603 new cases of COVID-19 infection, 277 deaths in last 24 hours

India today added 168,603 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection and 277 deaths in the last 24 hours as the Central and State governments as well as local administrations continued to take measures to contain the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic that is fuelled mainly by the new and more transmissible Omicron variant of the virus.
The country had yesterday reported 179,723 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 146 deaths, including 14 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala, where the data of the past many months is being reconciled and updated as per the broadened definition of COVID-19 deaths under new guidelines.
The 277 deaths recorded today includes 147 previously undeclared fatalities in Kerala.
The continuing surge in new cases comes even as more States imposed fresh restrictions on the movement of people in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, including night curfews, closure of schools and colleges and limits on the numbers at social and religious gatherings.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) said a total of 4,461 cases of Omicron had been reported in India so far (up from 4,033 yesterday), of whom 1,711 had recovered.
Of the 4,461, Maharashtra accounted for the most at 1,247, followed by Rajasthan 645, Delhi 546, Karnataka 479, Kerala 350, Uttar Pradesh 275, Gujarat 236, Tamil Nadu 185, Haryana 123 and Telangana 123.
With the latest data released by the MoHFW this morning, the death toll in the country from COVID-19 so far has climbed to 484,213 today.
The total number of cases of infection till now, since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in India in late January 2020, rose to 35,875,790 today.
Of the 277 COVID-19 deaths posted in India in the last 24 hours, Kerala accounted for 166 (including 147 previously undeclared fatalities), Delhi 17, West Bengal 16 and Tamil Nadu 11.
All other states reported less than ten deaths each, with nine States and Union Territories posting zero deaths during this period.
The number of those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 34,570,131 today, up 69,959 from yesterday. The recovery rate slipped further to 96.36% from 96.62% yesterday.
The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country rose for the 14th day today, going up by 97,827 to 821,446 today.
Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in the country at 209,764, followed by 89,194 in West Bengal, 65,806 in Delhi, 62,767 in Tamil Nadu, 60,177 in Karnataka, 38,436 in Kerala, 33,946 in Uttar Pradesh, 32,469 in Gujarat, 26,019 in Jharkhand, 25,088 in Rajasthan, 22,500 in Haryana, 20,939 in Bihar, 20,199 in Odisha, 19,379 in Punjab, 19,222 in Chhattisgarh, 14,995 in Telangana and 10,139 in Goa.
Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 152.89 crore today, including 92.07 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours.
The Daily Positivity Rate dropped to 10.64% while the Weekly Positivity Rate rose to 8.85%.
