IIT Kanpur student commits suicide after bad performance in exams

A first year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room today after he performed poorly in the semester examinations.

Police sources here said that Mehtab, son of a Uttar Pradesh police sub-inspector Sheikh Mohammad, posted at Kannauj, allegedly committed suicide following his bad performance in the Physics paper in the first semester exams.

A suicide letter was found from the hostel room, police said, adding they were investigating the case.

The student's family had been informed about the tragedy, they added.
