Central allocation of Remdesivir to be discontinued as supply more than demand: Minister

New Delhi, May 29, 2021

The central allocation of Remdesivir will be discontinued as supply has exceeded the demand with production ramped up ten times from 33,000 vials/day on April 11 to 3,50,000 vials/day at present, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri Mansukh Mandaviya said today.

The Government has also increased the number of plants producing the drug from 20 to 60 plants within a month. Now the country has enough Remdesivir as the supply is much more than the demand, he said.

Along with discontinuing the allocation of Redmdesivir to the states, the Minister said he has directed the National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Agency and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to continuously monitor the availability.

The Government has also decided to procure 50 lakh vials of Remdesivir to maintain it as a strategic stock for any emergency requirement, he added.
