5 dead, several feared trapped as building collapses in Kanpur
At least five people died and several more are still feared trapped under the debris after an under-construction six-storeyed building collapsed in the Jajmau area of Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh yesterday.
Rescue teams managed to extricate a three-year-old girl alive in the early hours of today after she lay buried under the rubble for about twelve hours, official sources said.
In all, about 15 people have been brought out alive from the debris but the authorities feared that about 30 people might still be trapped.
The rescue teams, using gas cutters and earthmovers, searched through the night for survivors, the sources said. Sniffer dogs and special cameras were being used to look for signs of life under the rubble, they said.
Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and personnel of the Army have joined the search and rescue operations.
Most of the victims were said to be workers and members of their families, mainly from Chhattisgarh.
