Thousands bid farewell to legendary actress Sridevi
Thousands of fans joined the family and friends of Indian  actress Sridevi and bid her a tearful adieu as her mortal remains were cremated with state honours at the Vile Parle Seva Samaj crematorium here late this afernoon.
Sridevi, 54, widely regarded as the Indian female "superstar" with a pan-India following and an amazing five-decade long career, died in her room in a hotel in Dubai late on Sunday night, sending shock waves through the film industry and saddening millions of her fans across the world.
Initial reports had suggested that the actress had died after suffering a cardiac arrest, but the Dubai Police on Monday, after the completion of post-mortem analysis, said that she had died of accidental drowning  in the bath tub of her hotel suite. Following this, the case was transferred to the Dubai Public Prosecution, which cleared the release of her body to the family after carrying out the "regular legal procedures followed in such cases".
The body was then embalmed and flown to Mumbai late yesterday evening in a private jet, which landed her around 10.30 pm yesterday.
The body was kept at the Celebration Sports Club hall in Lokhandwala Esate, near her Green Acres residence, this morning for a few hours to enable people to pay their last respects to her. Thousands of people thronged the hall for a last glimpse of the actress.
Later, after prayers, her body, wrapped in a red-and-golden Kanjeevaram saree and draped in the national tri-colour, was taken to the crematorium for the last rites.
Her family, including husband and film producer Boney Kapoor, daughers Jahnvi and Khushi and step-son Arjun Kapoor, travelled with her body.
A police gun salute was rendered amidst cries of "Sridevi Amar Rahe" as hundreds of Bollywood personalities paid their tributes to their colleague and friend. Well-known industrialist Anil Ambani, who had sent his private aircraft to bring the body from Dubai to Mumbai, was amongst those present.
Those who turned up to bid farewell to Sridevi included actors Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Tabu, Esha Deol, Sushmita Sen, Anupam Kher, Arjun Rampal, Farhan Akhtar, Ajay Devgun, Jaya Bachchan, Sidharth Malhotra, Vidya Balan, Dia Mirza, filmmakers Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bansali, Farah Khan, Shekhar Kapur and music director Bappi Lahiri.
There was a sea of mourners on both sides of the road as her cortege wound its way to the crematorium. Many people had climbed onto trees and clambered on gates to get a better look.
Sridevi, her husband and film producer Boney Kapoor and their younger daughter Khushi had gone to the UAE to attend the wedding of Mohit Marwah, the nephew of Kapoor, in Ras Al Khaimah.
After that, while other members of the family had returned to India, the three had stayed on in Dubai and taken up an apartment in the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel on February 22. In between, Kapoor flew to India to attend an event and flew back to Dubai on February 24 to surprise his wife. According to various accounts, the two had decided to go out for dinnner that evening and Sridevi had gone into the bathroom to get ready. When she did not come out for a long time, her husband tried calling out to her and when there was no response he sought help from the hotel staff to open the bathroom door, only to find the actress lying motionless in the bath tub.
Sridevi is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and their two daughters -- Janhvi, who is making her debut as an actress in the Hindi movie Dhadak, and Khushi.
