New Delhi, April 16, 2012

As many as 55 people were extricated from the debris of the building of a blanket factory that collapsed in the Focal Point area near Jalandhar in Punjab late last night, official sources said.

Rescue operations were still on and efforts were on to bring out some more people believed to be still trapped under the debris, Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti said from the scene of the incident.
He said the factory owners had indicated that about 10-15 people could be still trapped inside, while workers said the number was much higher.
"But we are not going by these numbers and we will continue the rescue efforts till the last worker is accounted for," Bharti said.
Personnel from the fire brigade, the Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were involved in the rescue operations.
The building collapsed a little before midnight last night. The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained.
