A nine-member Indian Air Force (IAF) women mountaineering team, led by Sqn Ldr Nirupama Pandey, was flagged off by Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal PV Naik, at Air Headquarters here today.
The team would undertake an expedition to the twin peaks, Mt. Kamet (7757 M) and Mt Abi Gamin (7254 M), in Garhwal Himalayas, an official press release said.
The expedition to Mt. Kamet is aimed at preparing for the proposed expedition to Mount Everest in 2011. The team has already scaled Mt. Stok Kangri (6121M) in Ladakh region in August 2009 and Bhagirathi-II (6513 M) in Gangotri in September 2009.
Concurrently, another joint team of mountaineers from IAF and Indian Army would also be training and attempting these peaks, the release added.
