At least eight people, four of them children, were buried alive while three others injured as a portion of a slab of a five-storeyed building came crashing down in Ulhasnagar township of this district in Maharashtra today, police said tonight.
Police said a portion of Shheshmahal building in the township collapsed this evening at around 1730 hrs.
A rescue team of police and fire brigade personnel extracted the bodies from under the debris and could save only three lives, they said.
The medical officer of the Central Hospital at Ulhasnagar, Dr B L Waghmare confirmed eight deaths and said three others were admitted to the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Akash Pritam Hazari (5), Renu Kishore Basant (48), Ravina Kishore Bajaj (40), Dinesh Jaipal Khatri (7), Hanni Sunil Kukreja (5) and Mahesh Sunil Kukreja (4). Two women -- Sonu (30) and Asha (40) -- succumbed to their injuries in a private hospital.
A massive relief and rescue operation was still going on at the site, in which the team of fire brigade and police personnel were assisted by the local volunteers and civic workers.
According to reports, several people are still feared trapped under the debris.
Police said that the building was constructed in 1996 and certain repair work was going on when the slab crashed.
Those who lost their lives were residing on the third and fourth floors of the building, they added.
