3 dead, 6 hurt as school van collides with train in Punjab

Three children were killed and six others injured, two of them seriously, when a school van collided with a passenger train at an unmanned railway level crossing near Mahuwal station here today.

The school van, belonging to Mulawi Devi Model School of Nakodar, came in the way of Nakodar-Ludhiana DMU passenger train at the crossing near Mahuwal station. The train pushed the school van up to some distance before it came to a halt.

The deceased children were identified as Kirandeep Kaur (5), Arika (8) and her brother Abhishek (7). The injured were admitted to the local civil hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, who visited the hospital, announced Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the deceased children and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
