At least 24 passengers suffered injuries when the 12879 Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Lokmanya Tilak Express rammed into the guard van of a goods train near Salagaon in Cuttack district of Odisha in heavy fog, leading to the derailment of eight coaches.
East Coast Railway (ECR) officials said the mishap occurred at around 7 am betwen Salagaon and Nergundi stations in the Khurda Road Division of ECR, when there was heavy fog in the area.
A Railway Accident Medical Van was sent to the spot, about 22 km from Cuttack and 42 km from Bhubaneswar, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Senior officials of the Railways and the district administration had also reached the scene.
According to the officials, while five coaches had derailed, three otehrs had suffered "minor displacement" from the tracks.
They said that, of the injured passengers, five had suffered major injuries and 11 minor injuries. First aid was given to eight persons.
The officials said people from nearby villages were the first to reach the scene of the accident and render help to the injured passengers.
The remaining passengers of the train were oved to Cuttack and Bhubaneswar by buses.
Following the accident, some trains were diverted via Naraj, the officials added.
