2 dead, 7 hurt as school van collides with train

Two girl students were killed and seven others were injured, three of them seriously, when a school van collided with a passenger train at an unmanned railway level crossing near Mahowal station in this district of Punjab today.

The school van, belonging to Mulavi Devi Model School of Nakodar, came in the way of Nakodar-Ludhiana DMU passenger train at the crossing.

The train pushed the school van upto some distance before it came to a halt.

The two deceased children were identified as Kirandeep Kaur (5) and Arika (8). The injured were admitted to the local civil hospital.

District Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, who visited the hospital, announced Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the two deceased children and Rs 50,000 each for the seven injured.
