Jalandhar: 12 children die after school bus collides with truck

As many as 12 children and the driver of their school bus were killed when it collided head-on with a truck laden with stones at Jaheer village near Jalandhar in Punjab this morning, police said.

Jalandhar Rural Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh said the bus, which belonged to the local branch of Akal Academy, had collected the children from the village and was on its way to the school when the mishap occurred around 0800 hours.
While seven of the children died on the spot, the other five succumbed to their injuries in a nearby hospital.
Nine other children suffered injuries in the accident and were admitted to the hospital, where three were discharged after first aid, he said.
In all, there were 24 children in the bus, all below the age of ten. The mini-bus was badly damaged in the collision, he said.
A case had been filed against the driver of the truck, who absconded from the scene, Mr Singh added.
