Five children die after tree falls on school bus in Kerala
Five children died and seven others suffered injuries when a tree fell on their schoolbus while it was dropping them home after school in Kothamangalam near here this evening.
The victims -- three boys and two girls -- were between the ages of five and 13 and were students of the Vidya Vikas School at Karukadom in the town in Ernakulam district.
The incident occurred at around 4.30 pm when the bus, carrying about 15 students, was passing by the Mar Baselios Institute of Technology and Science (MBITS) at Nellimattom, the sources said.
Scores of passers-by, police and other emergency personnel rushed to the spot and brought out the trapped schoolchildren and rushed them to hospital. The injured children were said to be out of danger.
Political leaders and officials were making efforts to hand over the bodies of the victims at the earliest to their families, doing away, if necessary, with the requirement of post-mortem examinations, sources added.
The government has also announced that it would bear the expenses of medical treatment of the injured children.
